The Story of the Titans: From Secret to Stewardship

Deep within the lush, primeval rainforest of northern California lies a hidden sanctuary of giants known as the Grove of the Titans. Tucked away on an alluvial flat near Mill Creek within Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, this sacred area contains some of the largest and most massive Coast Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) on Earth by volume—including ancient colossal sentinels like the Lost Monarch, Screaming Titans, Chesty Puller, El Viejo del Norte, and the Del Norte Titan.

For centuries, the indigenous Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation walked these lands with reverence. In 1998, researchers mapped the grove, keeping its exact coordinates a closely guarded secret to protect the delicate ecosystem.

However, around 2011, the grove's secret was compromised when its GPS coordinates leaked onto social media. Within a few years, thousands of visitors flocked to the area. Lacking official trails, hikers created a damaging web of "social trails" that trampled the pristine ferns, destroyed native understory plants, and severely eroded the soil directly above the redwoods' incredibly shallow and sensitive root systems.

🛠️ A Marvel of Modern Conservation

To prevent these ancient trees from dying, a massive, multi-year collaborative project was launched by California State Parks, the National Park Service, Save the Redwoods League, and the Redwood Parks Conservancy.

Completed recently, a magnificent 1,500-foot elevated metal boardwalk now winds gracefully through the grove. This heavy-duty, raised platform allows visitors to stand in awe under the canopy while entirely isolating human foot traffic from the fragile forest floor below. Keep an eye out as you explore—while the trees themselves are left unlabeled to preserve the wild, natural state of the forest, iconic sentinels like Chesty Puller guard the entrance, and the massive Lost Monarch towers further along the loop.
